Back-to-school season doesn’t mean family adventures have to stop. Fall is actually a great time to explore Florida — whether you have just one free day or an entire weekend.
From snorkeling in the Keys to camping under the stars, here are seven easy family getaway ideas from Miami to add to your fall list.

1. Florida Keys
📍 About 1.5–2.5 hours from Miami
The Florida Keys are one of the easiest ways to feel like you’re on vacation without traveling far from home.
Spend the day in Key Largo, take a boat trip, go snorkeling, explore the coral reefs, or simply enjoy lunch by the water. If you have a full weekend, continue down the Overseas Highway toward Islamorada or Key West.
Great with kids: snorkeling, kayaking, boat trips, marine life and plenty of time on the water.

2. Everglades National Park
📍 About 1–1.5 hours from Miami
One of the most unique national parks in the country is practically in our backyard.
Take a family day trip to Everglades National Park, explore one of the shorter trails, look for alligators and birds, or add an airboat ride to the adventure.
For kids, even a simple nature walk here can turn into a wildlife expedition.
Tip: Start early in the morning for cooler temperatures and more time to explore.

3. Naples & Marco Island
📍 About 2 hours from Miami
Head across the state to Florida’s Gulf Coast for a completely different weekend atmosphere.
Naples is great for walking, dining and watching the sunset, while Marco Island offers beaches, boat trips and plenty of opportunities to spot dolphins.
It works equally well as a long day trip or an easy overnight getaway.
Great with kids: beaches, dolphins, boat rides and a relaxed day by the Gulf.

4. Florida Springs
📍 About 4–5 hours from Miami
This one requires a little more driving, but it’s worth turning into a full weekend.
Crystal-clear springs, kayaking, wildlife and beautiful natural surroundings show kids a completely different side of Florida.
Silver Springs, Rainbow Springs and Blue Spring are just a few places worth exploring.
As temperatures begin to cool, fall is also a great time to spend more of the day outdoors.
Great with kids: kayaking, nature trails, wildlife watching and an outdoor weekend away from the city.

5. Orlando Beyond the Theme Parks
📍 About 3.5–4 hours from Miami
A family weekend in Orlando doesn’t always have to mean Disney or Universal.
Visit Kennedy Space Center, explore one of Central Florida’s natural areas, take a boat ride or combine one major attraction with a quieter day outdoors.
It’s a great way to experience Orlando differently — especially if your kids have already visited the theme parks several times.

6. St. Augustine
📍 About 5 hours from Miami
It’s a little too far for a casual day trip, but St. Augustine makes a great two- or three-day family road trip.
Walk through the historic streets, visit Castillo de San Marcos and enjoy an atmosphere that feels completely different from South Florida.
Kids often love exploring the fort, while the historic district makes it easy to spend hours simply walking and discovering something new.

7. Go Family Camping
Sometimes the best weekends don’t need a long list of attractions.
A tent, a campfire, bikes, dinner outside and a night under the stars can become one of those simple experiences kids remember for years.
Florida has campgrounds and state parks everywhere — near beaches, rivers, forests and natural springs.
If your family has never tried tent camping before, fall is a great time to start. And it doesn’t need to be complicated: even one night close to home can make a perfect first camping trip.

You Don’t Need a School Break to Explore
One of the best things about living in Florida is that a family adventure is almost always within driving distance.
Sometimes all it takes is a couple of hours on the road to discover somewhere completely new and get a break from school, work and the usual weekly routine.
And these experiences can be even better when you have other families to share them with.
At Miami Family Club, that’s a big part of what brings our community together — exploring new places, giving kids new experiences and creating memories with other families along the way.
There’s plenty more ahead this fall, from family adventures and our MFC cruise to a Halloween picnic, camping weekend and a winter trip to Colorado.
